Fascinating composition. The picnic is an afterthought, a fuzzy detail in the corner. The subject is the cracking, insecure-looking overlook and the ominous lake beyond.
I always think it's interesting how black and white can often make photos more atmospheric rather than less. This does have an Alfred Hitchcock sense of "something's about to happen to those picnickers, and it probably won't be pleasant".

This is why you shouldn't stick to photo rules like rules of thirds. Cinematic, spooky timeless and yes hitchcock would have been proud.
